History
We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. This is our story.
1971 • McMunn & Yates was formed when Terry Yates and Stan and Gordon McMunn opened their first store in Dauphin, Manitoba. Terry was an experienced retailer while Stan and Gordon had been contractors in the Dauphin area for more than twenty-five years. Soon after they opened their doors a devastating fire, five months into operations, almost spelled the end for McMunn & Yates. The fire could have been a crushing blow to such a young business but it did not daunt the three partners. They all agreed they had a viable business and decided to rebuild immediately with the help of many community volunteers.
1972 • The company joins the building materials buying group Tim-Br-Marts. Ltd. This step is taken to ensure it remains competitive in an increasingly competitive market.
1977 • McMunn & Yates undertakes its first expansion when it opens a building supplies outlet in Grandview, Manitoba.
1980 • The company expands into the manufacturing business with the purchase of Tim-Br-Fab Industries in Rivers, Manitoba. Tim-Br-Fab, now located in Dauphin, specializes in the production of roof and floor trusses and prefabricated products for the residential, commercial and industrial building sectors.
1983 • The retail expansion continues with the addition of a store in Roblin, Manitoba.
1986 • The Company expands its rural reach once more with the opening of a store in Russell, Manitoba. At the same time, all existing stores are re-designed and reopened as McMunn & Yates Do-it Centers. This new merchandising concept helps set the company apart from its competitors.
1988 • The company purchases Charleswood Building Supplies in Winnipeg, MB. The store specializes in sales to contractors and professional builders and strives to provide a level of service unique to the Winnipeg market.
1989 • McMunn and Yates purchases the building supply company. F.Brent Reid in Brandon. The store is renamed and relocated to its current 18,000 sq ft building.
1991 • The company opens an outlet in Ste-Rose-du-Lac, Manitoba.
1999 • The company opens McMunn & Yates Roofing & Drywall Center in Brandon to specialize in the applicator market.
2001 • The company expands to the Interlake region of Manitoba with the purchase of G.K. Smith & Sons. The store is re-named McMunn & Yates Do-it Center.
2002 • The company accepts an invitation to join the Independent Lumber Dealers Cooperative (ILDC) buying group. ILDC is the premier lumber and building materials group in Canada.
2002 • The Company expands to the far north. Nor West Do-It Center in Thompson joins the company and becomes the ninth McMunn & Yates Do-it Center location. Later that same year, McMunn & Yates welcomes Jenkins Flooring in Brandon to the family.
2004 • The company changes its name back to the original banner ofMcMunn & Yates Building Supplies. At the same time the Winnipeg store is renamed McMunn & Yates Building Supplies.
2004 • The company purchases Miracle Lumber Mart in Beausejour, Manitoba. The store caters to a mix of both contractors and retail customers and specializes in agricultural buildings and a unique storage building, called the Miracle Mini Shed.
2005 • The company purchases G.W.D. Sales Ltd. in Portage, Manitoba. The store caters to a mix of both Hutterite and contractor customers.
2007 • The company builds a new building in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. The 3-day opening celebration boasts a special guest appearance by "Mr. Hockey" – Gordie Howe.
2008 • The company builds a Distribution Centre, a new 50,000 square foot building in Headingly, Manitoba.
2010 • W.S. Staruiala Building Materials is acquired in Flin Flon, MB. This store serves a large trading area in Northern Manitoba.
